Dal Palak / Spinach in lentils

Today I would be sharing a simple version of Dal Palak because this really turned out yummy and I want to jot down the recipe before I forget!

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup Palak washed and chopped
  2. 1/2 cup yellow moving Dal washed and soaked for 10–15min
  3. 1 medium size tomato chopped
  4. 1 medium size onion
  5. 1 tablespoon ginger garlic paste
  6. 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  7. 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  8. Salt as per taste
  9. 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  10. 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  11. 2 whole red chilli ( I used datar brand whole red chilli)
  12. 1small elaichi
  13. 1 small cinnamon stick
  14. 1 bay leaf
  15. 3 tablespoon oil.

How to make this recipe

  1. In a pressure cooker add washed Dal, chopped tomatoes and little salt and pressure cook until two whistles on medium to low flame
  2. Let the pressure cooker cool down and check if the Dal is cooked properly,mash a little with spatula
  3. In a kadai, heat 3 tablespoons oil add cumin seeds, whole red chilli, green elaichi, cinnamon and bay leaf and sauté for minute on medium flame
  4. Now add onion and saute till translucen,then add ginger garlic paste and saute till you get nice aroma
  5. Then add chopped spinach leaves and stir occasionally because it may stick to the bottom of the pan, cook for 5min or until all the water has evaporated. Please sure you don’t burn the spinach in this process else the Dal Palak will have smoky flavour 😁
  6. Now add red chilli and turmeric powder and saute for a second. Then add boiled Dal and bring it to boil.
  7. Check the consistency if it’s too thick add water at this point and cook for five minutes
  8. Just before switching the flame off add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice!

Serve Dal Palak with roti or rice!
